Mike, I was told by a Sun engineer that the 6140's backplane was switched (not looped). In fact, he described it almost exactly as you are describing the 2540's backplane.
Honestly I would have expected similar results between the two arrays. . . for a small to mid-size work load. I would expect the 6140 to shine as IOPS (OLTP) increased or streams are added due to the increased cache size.
