I think I've found the issue-- the SATA controller in this system (Intel ESB2) was operating in "compatible" mode (read: IDE). I recall reading that ZFS performs poorly on IDE due to a lack of code optimization. I tried activating AHCI mode in the BIOS, but that made my system unbootable, as the device names all changed. I'm reinstalling with AHCI on, so I'll follow up once we've been able to re-run our tests.
