Data Domain has proposed an extension that would allow
backup to a file system and has some code on sourceforge:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/ndmfs/
The SNIA NDMP Software TWG has discussed incorporating this,
but has not integrated it as yet. OpenSolaris could then
pick it up from SNIA.

I've hit a roadblock with NDMPcopy... some observations:
* I've used the Solaris NDMP implementation with Arkeia, so I know it works.
* I can authenticate via ndmpcopy, but not move data.
* I have no interest in tape, just looking for the ability to do NDMP 3-way
disk-to-disk.
* The NDMP design doc
(http://www.opensolaris.org/os/community/arc/caselog/2007/397/) suggest there
are special capabilities for ZFS, including the ability to use snapshots and
even use 'zfs send' as opposed to 'tar' or 'dump'... but its unclear as to
whether that is done or to come.
Ultimately, I would like the ability to move data via NDMP without the use of expensive and overblown backup software, and tape drives are obsolete for my environment.
Details are needed on what the _real_ capabilities of the current NDMP
implementation are, its status (still in development?), and if there is any
intention to create tools (either improving ndmpcopy to do these things or
something new) for customers to utilize.
Details please. :)
