Data Domain has proposed an extension that would allow

The SNIA NDMP Software TWG has discussed incorporating this,
but has not integrated it as yet. OpenSolaris could then
pick it up from SNIA.
I've seen that, but its aging and there is no guarantee it will bear
fruit. The NDMP activity in general seems stalled... last updated to
ndmfs was Jan of last year, most other tools are early in the decade and
the SDK seems dead.
Actually SNIA took over the SDK last year and has produced a work in
progress draft of the SDK,
updated to v4 here:

If you pointers to what the SNIA NDMP TWG is doing I'd be interesting
but at this point it looks like the 10 year rule applies and NDMP won't
actually blossom until around 2011.
Most of the work is proceeding inside of SNIA with SNIA members for now, but
there is a Google group:
http://groups.google.com/group/ndmp-software
where SNIA is interacting with the larger community (but just getting
started).
The latest NDMP copy test suite you have been playing with is on it's
way to SNIA shortly, where
it will also be incorporated into the SDK.
