how many disk drives? :P i think honestly that a "head unit" with the lower power requirements and a couple eSATA cards w/ port multiplier support is the most extensible solution and gives a LOT of options for expansion. problem is port multiplier support is not supported or if it is it's not very stable from what i've seen.
each port on an eSATA card can support 5 disks using a single cable, and each card has 4 ports. each card = 20 disks then...
