Recent versions of the mpt driver and mpxio will grock mpath'ed SATA drives. This is to support such a feature on the J-series JBODs specifically, and I make use of that feature on my Solaris 10 machines which have attached J4200s.

It was my understanding from a recent discussion with Sun that you can't multipath to SATA drives. Multipathing is specific to SAS and there's no support in SATA for this.

Subject: [storage-discuss] PCIE SAS HBA, J4400 multipathing

Folks,

We just deployed a J4400 on an X4150 server, PCI-Express SAS HBA
(SG-XPCIE8SAS-E-Z), 24x 500GB SATA drives. The J4400 has two SIM's,
and we've connected each SIM's port-0 to a separate port on the HBA.

Software is Solaris-10U7_x86, patched current as of yesterday, and we've
got all firmware up-to-date as well (including that from CAM-6.4.1.5,
for SIM's and disks).
Solaris-10_x86 driver: MPT HBA driver v1.85
        LSI 1068E p/n: 375-3487-04
        LSI 1068E BIOS: 6.26.00.00 (2008.10.14)
        LSI 1068E f/w: 1.26.00.00-IT
        SIM firmware: 3R21
        drives: SEAGATE ST35000N-3AZY

So, all should be compatible with mpt's multipathing, and mpt.conf
has the mpxio-disable="no" and disable-sata-mpxio="no" settings.
We've let "smtsboot -e" do its thing, but multipathing is not
working -- the system continues to see 48 drives.

And yes, it's clear that drive 0 is identical to drive 24, etc.
The GUID's from "raidctl -l -g 0.0.0 0" and "raidctl -l -g 0.24.0 0"
are identical.

So, what magic might we be missing?

Regards,

Marion
