Hello, Looking to build a home file server using ZFS. The box will also do some light VM work most likely with Zen and may eventually be a NFS target for some test ESX servers. I'll also have some form of LDAP server running on the box inside of a Zone, same with a mail/FTP server.
Anyway, I had some questions as to hardware. I'm looking at getting a case that will support 20 drives and slowly adding the hard drives as I need them. However, knowing that ZFS won't allow you to add drives to an existing vdev yet, I may purchase the remaining drives to fill up the case next year or so so as to not have to find larger drives/configuration to move my data to in preparation for increasing the storage size. I'm looking at this HBA from LSI as it allows for management of up to 244 devices, permits straight JBOD, and is relatively cheap: http://www.lsi.com/storage_home/products_home/host_bus_adapters/sas_hbas/lsisas3081er/index.html I haven't found a SAS extender yet that will work with this HBA, are there any recommendations? Also, is this even a good way of accomplishing what I'm going after? Using that card w/ (a) suitable extender(s) should allow me to fill the initial 20 hard drive case and perhaps extend onto a second case that only has drives when/if the need arises.
