OK, I tested it out opening the jumper and that works. I haven't flashed the firmware yet, but I don't really care about booting from that array anyway (being a raidz2 pretty much precludes that.)
The Sun device checking application then recognized it as a completely different controller, which was interesting. Everything I have says it's HW RAID. On my MB, you have to install a little button thing (which costs some fairly small amount of money) to get HW RAID5 out of the system.
