Hi Jack, Thanks for the response. I had heard rumor (read in comments on a sun blog) that the OpenStorage (fishworks) box only allows me to create 32 targets. It could be something underneath that is limiting that, but alas, 32 targets. It appear that best practice is to create a target for a virtual machine, so that the "alias" is actually useful, like the VM-name. At that point, numbered LUNS aren't a big deal really as there would only really be a need for 2 at this point. In order to follow that scheme, I am going to need FAR more than 32 targets. Instead, I thought I would just create a single target for all the VMs in one "farm" and then I would be able to name the disks and refer to them by their name somehow. I guess thats out too.
As a workaround I can create LUNs, specifying the LUN numbers, then just have some sort of "mapping" document that keeps track of the first 5 belong to vm-1 the next 5 belong to vm-2, etc. I know I am just complaining, but I thought I'd make my case for iSCSI LUN aliases. Honestly, its the same problem over FC. Again the storage allows me to "name" the LUN, but when I get to the OS, I get a big list of obnoxiously named devices and I have to compare WWNs to figure out which is which. I guess I want alias names for LUNs in general then :) Tommy -- This message posted from opensolaris.org _______________________________________________ storage-discuss mailing list storage-discuss@opensolaris.org http://mail.opensolaris.org/mailman/listinfo/storage-discuss
