Indeed, this is a problem for following the ZFS shareiscsi model. See:

This describes how to use the target alias model (note that the
virt-install naming has changed in recent builds, you now need to
specify the LUN too, e.g. /alias/0/domu-226)

I was told earlier that LUN aliases would be possible to implement (and
I'll be more than ready to support that in xVM if it were to happen).
It's disturbing to hear that this isn't supported/supportable: 256 is
really not that much better than 32 indeed.

I'm afraid you just have to suck up the old storage way of impenetrable
magic numbers...
