I know that this may be a silly thing to do, but if it's a zfs drive, I've 
played the following trick:

Attach the new drive as a mirror and let it silver.
Install grub onto the new drive.
Detach the new drive.

Then you can power off, put the new drive in the old drive's bay, and boot off 
the new drive.
