I had the same issues with two different drives, one WD, one Samsung. I tried
them in 3 different computers, with Solaris, Linux and Windows.

Copying a couple of gig onto them worked fine, if they were completely empty,
but after a while they just got horribly slow.

Badblocks didn't show any issues, Windows didn't show anything in the eventlog,
Linux didn't show anything and Solaris didn't either.

The output from HD Tune (Windows only) was pretty interesting though. HD Tune
offers a random access test on the raw device, and for normal drives the access
times cluster around 10-20 ms. For the broken drives the access times went all
over the place up to 5s.

I ended up sending them back, got new ones and the issue vanished, even though
the new drives are the same model and everything.

Maybe this helps.
