Hi, two things:
1. You can use smartctl directly under Osol with ahci. Just need to install it from tarball. 2. ahci support for ICH10 ought to be quite recent. When I tried back in late November to install OSOL on a x58 based system, it wouldn't recognize any disk and wouldn't even boot the live CD from ICH. If at any rate, I'd suspect the problem there, respectively in ICH firmware (BIOS). ICH10 is quite different from ancestors.
