Now looks like the problem is how to get a hard drive capable of reporting its sector size correctly.

This worries me a bit since in my day job working in a PC/notebook maker, 4k transition is very real and certainly coming next year, 512-byte drives are almost definitely things from past in next year. Hope there will be some "honest" 4k drives for rest of non-Windows world.
