For whats it's worth I sym linked libzfs.so.2 to libzfs.so and used the modified zpool binary to do the zpool create then used the "normal" zpool binary for all other work.
Seems to have worked ok although it's clearly not perfect as the modified binary errors if I use it to do a zpool status.
