I don't have much else to offer. Things just worked for me.
Make sure that /dev/audio has group and world read and write
(crw-rw-rw). You may also want to check /dev/audio1 and
/dev/dsp1, though probably not. Also, make sure that your sound
is set loud enough using the sound mixer.
If you do not get any sound ONLY while playing audio CDs (i.e.
mp3s work fine) and this also happens in Windoze (or if you
don't use that operating system), chances are that the wire
connecting your sound card with your CD-ROM isn't connected.
If your sound card support is compiled as a module, make sure
that soundcore is loaded (lsmod, as root). I also have emu10k1
loaded but that's because I have a soundblaster live.
Also, check out the Soundblaster HOWTO which is, I think,
available on the Linux Documentation Project web site. My
general experience is that things get much easier as time passes
so it is probably easier to set up than how they describe.
