It sounds like you've been mixing apples and oranges.

Do all of your modules load?  I suspect that you're loading the wrong
initrd's when you load the kernels up.  Make sure that the kernel that you
point lilo to is accompanied with an appropriate RAM disk.  Also, make
sure that the LILO version  is consistent amonst the distributions. 

One way to check might be to make a boot disk under each distribution
(therby avoiding LILO) to see if the problem persists.
