You can use regular debian packages without any problem. Most of the
packages in Storm Linux are straight from Debian - the basic difference
between debian and storm is there are additional Stormix-authored packages
available with Storm Linux (such as stormpkg and sas, although stormpkg is
now in Woody). And some packages have been recompiled for storm-potato
(a.k.a. hail) from higher versions numbers than are in an ordinary potato
(I think ...)

You can install just single .debs that you download from misc. sources
(such as a woody ftp site) by running something like:

  dpkg -i xchat_1.6.0-2.deb

Of course, in this case it's not going to work since this version of xchat
is compiled against a higher version of libc6 than is in potato. In which
case you'd need to either go to woody or compile your xchat 1.6 from a
tarball ...
