Actually, Craig's list includes stable and unstable sources.  Just 
comment out the unstable ones if you want and leave only the 
stable ones uncommented.  I use that list (or something close to it) 
all the time.  Just make sure you have the appropriate sites 
commented out or uncommented.  Okeedoke?
That way, if you want that new xchat 1.6, uncomment the woody 
sources and do 
apt-get update
apt-get install xchat
It should install the latest version of xchat for you available on the 
woody tree (it may or may not be xchat 1.6 and it may have other 
dependencies as mentioned in a previous reply to your post).
