Dear Richard It could make a difference, but the real problem with that is the difficult of getting the fuel to pop up under the existing fire.
There are large coal burners that are screw fed from below. Placing lignite on top of a glowing bed of coals boils off all the volatiles. It is just not how to burn coal. Feeding it from the side would not change that much.
