This is very interesting indeed... waste rice hulls worth about $US283 per 
tonne for its gas energy plus biochar value!

It is also very interesting that the Vietnamese will pay about $70 for about 
1/3 tonne of biochar plus ash. Say $US200 per tonne What are the specific and 
tangible advantages that the Vietnamese see with rice hull biochar, such that 
its price of $200 per tonne is economically justifiable? Hopefully, what they 
use to justify the use of biochar can be used to justify the greater use of 
biochar throughout the rest of the world.

Are there any specific advantages to Rice Hull biochar that would not be 
present in biochars from other agricultural wastes that are not as high in ash? 
Alternatively, is it possible that other biochar, with much less silica ash 
content, would be even more economically justifiable?

  From 30% to 50% by weight: this depends on the rate of gasification.
   


      3: Are the people actually using this biochar for agricultural purposes?

  Yes, it is commonly used throughout Vietnam.

      Biochar production therefore is a by-product of gas production.
      But if the the rice hull can be obtained, as is usually the case, 
free-of-charge,
      and if biochar can be sold at a nice profit,
      then gas is produced at a negative cost.
      Also note that when rice hulls are properly gasified,
      no smoke is produced.
      So in producing gas, one earns a profit in the sale of biochar.
      The big economic driver in this instance is the production of gas.

      There are people in Vietnam who know nothing about the value of rice hull 
gas,
      and they are busy each day making rice hull biochar in crude retorts.
      These low-temperature retorts emit clouds of smoke that can be seen from 
miles around.
      Focusing only on biochar production, these people do a lot of damage to 
the environment and should be shut down.
      The biochar that they produce is anything but uniform.
