Dear Aron
With natural convection, one would expect greater heat transfer
through a vertical plate than a horizontal plate.
1: As a first approximation, what about simply taking an arithmetic
percentage of each coefficient? For example, if the U factor for a
vertical plate, Uv was 10, and for a horizontal plate Uh 7, and the
cone angle was X, could you calculate the U Factor for the cone, Uc,
as follows:
Uc = X/90*Uv + (1-X/90)*Uh
2: If you can't find a method that gives acceptable results, then what
about taking a cylindrical heating element, with constant power input,
and measure its surface temperature when it is tilted at various
angles from the vertical?
I would guess that the second method would give better results than
the first. At the very least, it should give you a "real world
approximation" of the importance, or lack of importance, of cone angle.
Please let us know what you eventually find.
best wishes,
Kevin Chisholm

Can you help me on how to analyse heat tranfer through a cone... Im
designing a Biochar stove with coencentric cylinders. In essence its a
rocket stove. I want to make the inner cylinder conic so that i can retain
more heat in the stove....
The books i have read dont show me how to analyse conduction and convection
in a cone...
Will need a reply as soon as possible, if your able to help.
Thank you in advance...

Hi Aron,
We have the TLUD Handbook is on our web site here:

a shorter link directly to the handbook pdf file is

Plans for the Anila stove are here:

I hope that helps, let me know if I can be of any assitance.
Kind regards,
