Hi Paul, 3 tests are commonly used for looking at stove performance. Only 1 is the lab test. The other 2 are field tests and Aprovecho and the stove manufacturers that I know rely on the CCT and KPT to inform about all the important things a manufacturer needs to have in the stove, like does it cook well, what happens in the field, etc. The CCT and KPT have the cook use her fuel, pot, wood, etc while she makes the normal meals. Then we see if fuel is saved, if less emissions are made.
The process Aprovecho follows is to learn how fire works and how stoves can burn cleaner and use less fuel with the WBT and the emissions hood. But the stove is really designed by the user who knows what is has to do: make great food. So the field tests are as much a part of the process of designing a good stove as the lab test. Manufacturers often rely more on the field tests than lab tests because they want cooks to like their products. It's great that the Global Alliance is moving so quickly to have field testing be recognized as vitally important.
