Dear Ron

It was great to see you at the conference – been a long time.

Three brief points:

1. Testing TLUD’s and pellet stoves can be used by using the Burn Out
Protocol developed for BP. It is reported in detail by Penn Taylor in a paper
by him and in an ETHOS presentation (2009) which is available online. Not too
sure about accessing the paper. I believe it can be refined further to consider
more accurately the stoves that burn the charcoal at the end (Oorja etc) but it
is a simple and pretty accurate test of some things like the total energy
required to do something.

2. You mention the time required to operate the stove. This is a major
consider for the cooks/owners. It rates high on their list of stove attributes
in some places. People are busy. It will be on Cecil’s list of social impact
assessment questions.

3. Char production as a % of dry fuel mass is easy: remove all ash from
the char-ash mix. At present the char is weighed together with the ash with
both being counted as unburned charcoal. This was discussed here recently.

Regards

Crispin
