Okay, I just reread the article that Tim sent, and now I'm annoyed. Here's Jay's quote:
"I think this place has as much impact on St. Paul, albeit in a different way, as the Ordway," said Benanav. "This is a place that brings in Nobel laureates and Pulitzer Prize winners to speak. Without this store, the Twin Cities would be a flyover for folks like that."
We're in the land of the College of St. Catherine, St. Thomas, St. Olaf, Gustavus Adolphus, Carlton, the U of M, and Macalester, each of which attracts dozens of wonderful writers with varied interests and backgrounds every year (and each of which produces good writers, too), and we're to believe that if the Ruminator closed its doors that Minnesota would sink into anonymity? I understand the need to create a sense of urgency, and I might even buy a 'save the bookstore' bumper sticker, but that quote is a bit over the top.
