It ought to be possible to eliminate school busing for
high school students at least. High schoolers are old
enough to use public transportation. I attended high
school many years ago and, where I went, there was no
school bus provided. The school was about 10 miles
from my house and I, like most other students at the
school, rode regular city buses to school. We were
able to purchase monthly passes at a reduced rate.

The Denver Public Schools are now considering using
public transit for high school students. They are
proposing to have the district pay for student bus
passes. They calculate the cost at $19 per student
each month.

Tim reports that the SPPS transportation cost is $23
million/year. With 43,000 students, that is roughly
$535/year for each student or $60/month (figuring a 9
month school year). So, it seems that if we could come
close to Denver's projected cost of $19/month, there
are substantial savings to be had by shifting a
portion of the district's students to city buses.

Many students would also spend less time getting to
school using public transportation than they now do.

I vaguely recall this being discussed by the SPPS
board at one point. I wonder why it was rejected as a
money saving method.
