Yesterday, Thune showed that there are not 4 votes on the Council to support the bar and restaurant tax. He will not vote for it. He suggested that if the boys downtown want a stadium so bad maybe they should pay for it and proposed an income tax on those who work downtown. A "progressive" tax. One that wouldn't be levied on the average downtown worker but on those that could afford a 3% tax. I haven't talked to Dave about his idea, but in my earlier post I think I got the general idea of where Dave is going with this. If the CEO of Saint Paul companies or MN Mutual want the darned thing then a 3% tax on their multi million dollar salary shouldn't be such a hard burden. If those top 1000 workers downtown kicked in 5% of their incomes you'd have the bond covered in a flash. As to Mike F's post a 3% tax on food and beverage isn't a voluntary tax unless you make the decision to take your business somewhere else because of the additional tax in Saint Paul. That is why the vast majority of restaurants have told Thune they don't want the tax imposed on them and their customers. So, Mike if you make over $75,000 you'd better watch out or get your boss to start being against the City funding a stadium downtown. I can't see how an income tax could hurt business, the Chamber thinks its good for business to tax restaurants on the East Side for a downtown stadium. It has to be so wonderful for business if downtown employees making over $75,000 pay for the darned thing.
