Hello, my name is David Evertz, and I have been hanging around this group for several
years. The school budget topic has finally brought me out.

I've spent 55 of my 56 years living in this city (grew up on the east side--currently
live with my wife and daughter in Highland). Have a very strong belief in public
education, and my connections to SPPS are extensive:

I currently have a daughter at Highland Junior High, who spent her first K-6 years at
EXPO (a truly great experience). I graduated from Johnson in 1965 (having spent
grades 5-9 in Catholic schools). I taught in the district for 16 years, including the
first 10 years of the Open School.

I am a psychologist, and went from teaching to doing clinical work for the Wilder
Foundation--where in the middle 90's I spent 3 years as Director of the Eisenmenger
programs--the former Wilder/SPPS collaborative that worked with the most challenging
K-6 EBD students. For several years I was a member of the SPPS Special Education
Advisory Council.

I have spent a number of years consulting with child and family serving organizations,
and currently work with the Center for School Change at the Humphrey Institute,
heading up our work in St. Paul on the Gates Foundation efforts to convert large high
schools into small schools of choice (small learning communities). Over the last few
weeks I have been in the four schools we are funding here--Harding, Highland Senior,
Humboldt, Johnson, attended a parent meeting at Highland Junior, and am often meeting
at 360 Colborne.

Most important for this budget topic, I served three years on the SPPS Citizens Budget
and Finance Advisory Committee (CBFAC), from 98-01, including co-chairing the group in
the 2000-01 school year.
