Minnesota Stonewall DFL responds to President Bush Democrats need to unite for equal justice under the law. Minneapolis, MN - In response to President Bush's announcement of support for a U.S. Constitutional ban on gay marriage, the Minnesota Stonewall DFL Caucus called for immediate action from Democrats to oppose the President's efforts to write discrimination into the Constitution for the first time in American history. With statements of support from the current Democratic frontrunners Senator John Kerry and Senator John Edwards, Stonewall DFL is committed to electing a President that stands for equality and justice under the law regardless of which candidate is endorsed by the Democratic party. "For the first time in our nation's history, a president has proposed a amending the Constitution of the United States to restrict the liberties of a particular group of citizens rather than to expand basic, human civil rights. For the first time since our Founding Fathers crafted this document, a document the world has come to view as an instrument for freedom, the occupant in the White House wishes pervert it so to codify discrimination throughout our land," said Alan Hooker, Stonewall DFL Chair. "It is clear to Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Americans that the announcement by the President is motivated by election year politics in an attempt to defend inadequacies in his public policy regarding the economy, health care, the war in Iraq and a failing education system under his administration." Hooker continued "Stonewall DFL calls upon the Minnesota DFL, the DFL Feminist Caucus, Lavender Greens, Log Cabin Republicans, and every citizen in Minnesota who believes in civil rights to join us in fighting back this regressive measure by contacting their member of Congress, U.S. Senator, and the White House." The Minnesota Stonewall DFL Caucus is chartered DFL organization committed to electing public officials at all levels of government who support members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender communities.
