Two things. I have observed twice in the past year, semi-trailer trucks
pulled over and getting ticketed. One way small way I work to slow traffic
is use the left lane and drive at 45 along side a law abiding driver in the
right lane. Drives those SUVs crazy.

Every year, there's some lawmaker from the south who wants to
change this. Rep. Wilkin this year, Sen. Day from years
past. They eventually realize that the reason the speed is
at 45 is not the result of some state law that can be changed
at the whim of a few leadfoots, but is indeed part of a
federal court settlement that was entered into a long time
ago with a number of litigants, some of whom are part of this
discussion group. Dan's right - the state would be in a bit
of trouble were it to start picking and choosing which
federal court settlements it wanted to adhere to.

If Rep. Wilkin wants to undo the federal settlement, re-open
the case, turn the clock back twenty or thirty years, tear
out the road, replace the hundreds of homes that were removed,
and then reopen the Environmental Impact Statement needed
to build the road, cool. But I do hope he realizes pretty
soon that changing state law doesn't change the settlement
agreement that the state entered into twenty years ago that
outlined the deal that allowed the road to be built in the
first place.

I particularly like the part where Rep. Wilkin insists that
the State Legislature isn't bound by the agreement made by
the State Department of Transportation.
