The argument that West 7th St. owes its increasing vitality to the Xcel Center is I think open to question.
Not to anyone who lives in the area. As much as I hate to admit it (I was as adamantly against bonding for it as I am for any public dollars for baseball), the Xcel center has been a genuine boon to W. 7th.
Well it was promoted as a way to make ALL OF DOWNTOWN a more attractive place. Yes it has helped some business in the W7th area, but.... Where is all the nightclubs that were gonna benefit from it? Where are all the new stores in DT that were supposed to open and revitilize all of DT?
A small area has benefited without a doubt, but it was supposed to benefit all of Downtown, make it a place for people to go and have a good time all the time, even when there wasn't an event.
Now lets look at DT Mpls and see what it is that they have done with the Entertainment District... I just happen to be down at the Quest to get some tickets on a THURS night and noticed something really cool.
Down by 1st Ave and the Target Center it's pretty nice, as you get toward 5th Ave, what do you find.... STRIP CLUBS, SEX WORLD, and from what I saw people out smoking dope in the parking lots next to a couple of clubs, while the police just walked by.
So do we really want DT St Paul to be like DT Mpls? Do we want to open up some section of town so that we can have STRIP clubs and say something like SEX WORLD move in?
We are not and never will be MPLS, and frankly when you look at the only area in MPLS that is popular I really don't want to see St Paul become a MPLS East.
