Ann,

I know people who think that a political candidate showing up
unannounced at the front door is the equivalent of spam e-mail or
telemarketing phone calls.

Do you "door knock" when you campaign for office? How is that different
than a constituent knocking on your door?

Thanks,

Paul Gleeson

As a minor elected official, I certainly don't mind being contacted in
almost any way, shape, or form, but I'm not terribly intrigued by the
idea of people coming by my home, unannounced, to present their
positions or opinions -- primarily because I'm the one who ran for
office, not my spouse, children, houseguests, or pets. I don't believe
that everyone else in my household deserves to be engaged in my
constituent service responsibilities any more than they already are by
occasionally taking phone messages for me (or my being away from home
evening after evening after evening...).

When I'm out in public running errands, volunteering, exercising, eating
dinner, seeing a play, or even connecting with clients, I regularly bump
into people who know who I am and take the opportunity to express their
position. I'm happy to talk then if I'm able, or arrange another time to
talk (especially if I'm out with my family).

I take very seriously my responsibility for representing St. Paulites'
positions on public education, and I'm most willing to be as responsive
as humanly possible -- that's why I provide full contact information in
every email and make a point of getting back to people in a timely
fashion. At the same time, I'd appreciate a reasonable amount of respect
for my personal privacy and especially that of my family (politicians DO
have lives, you know ;-).

Thanks.

-- Anne
