Just a couple of thoughts from someone who has worked on many a campaign and been an
aide to an elected official.

Candidates go out door knocking to give the citizens access to them, to be there and
present themselves to the voters, to allow them to ask questions. When my
candidate/elected official shows up at your door, you get the opportunity to tell them
off for any of their votes or positions, and it happens all of the time. As a
campaign manager, I try to send someone with my candidate so that you don't physically
hurt him/her, or that they can call 911 if hell breaks out. Usually candidates run
for office because they are "people persons" and they love being out there with the
folks. Being a campaign manager, makes me by nature not a people person, so I worry
about some jerk punching my candidate in the nose.

So, when it comes to if you should show up unannounced at an elected official's door,
I would suggest the question is, would you have shown up at their door before they ran
for office? If you would, please keep doing it. If you wouldn't have, think about
why you have to show up right at that moment and can't make an appointment. Having
had TWO of my candidates/elected officials had Sharon Anderson show up on their front
doors scaring their wives and children, I'd suggest that if you think you "have to get
to them right now to give them a piece of your mind" maybe you're becoming a bit
undone.

People don't show up at elected officials doors that they don't know to tell them what
a good job they are doing and to tell their wives and/or husbands how lucky they are
to have this wonderful spouse. They show up MAD, and they scare people who's only
fault is they were foolish enough to put up with their mates desire to serve the
public. Or, worse yet to just be born to them.

So, take a deep breath, pick up the phone and make an appointment.
