A couple of SUGGESTIONS for the "same-sex" marriage discussion.

We are unlikely to convince each other to change our minds on the following issues:

 1) Whether or not homosexuality is a choice
    or a characteristic
 2) How GOD feels about homosexuality

Differing individuals have differing viewpoints on these questions. We don't have to accept them, but we should be at least able to acknowledge that they exist and aren't going anywhere for the time being.

Despite these differences, there are public policy decisions that must be made. The decision about how we define the institution of marriage.

To the extent that we are able to focus our discussion on the public policy implications of defining marriage, I personally think that our discussion will be more interesting and constructive.

To the extent that we choose to debate the morality or origins of homosexuality, I can almost assure you, that we will accomplish little and only deepen our political divisions.

I humbly submit these SUGGESTIONS for your consideration as we move this discussion forward.

Best wishes,
