I find nothing clumsy (nor less patriotic) with the following:

I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic, for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

What is it about the separation of church and state that is so hard to embrace?

I don't get that either. Why doesn't the SPPS say that version of the pledge? That would be an interesting thing to do - and what would be really hilarious is if the legislature tried to pass a law to require the "under god" portion of the pledge be included.
