New York City reports an 11% decline in the number of
people smoking and a 13% decline in the amount of
tobacco consumed since they initiated a ban on smoking
in restaurants and bars. However, NYC did more than
simply ban smoking in certain places. It also sharply
raised cigarette taxes (from 8 cents/pack to $1.50)
and introduced a number of smoking cessation programs
(including free nicotine patches).
