Too bad "Tailgunner Joe" McCarthy isn't here to see his commie-baiting tactics taken to a new low, but I'm afraid even he couldn't find any reason to blacklist anyone over this. It's not "capitalist bashing" to make the point that capitalism can't provide full employment, it's the simple fact of the matter. I know it must cause a lot of foot-stomping frustration to defuse the hackneyed get-a-different-job argument, but that argument only carries water in a free market and the labor market is not a free market. Either de-regulate the labor market or give up on the pretense of free-market utopianism. While you're wrestling with that fundamental inconsistency, it's still necessary to provide a floor of safety for the workplace in the context of artificially depressed demand for workers. Unless workers are protected by law from second-hand tobacco smoke, some hotel-and-restaurant worker will have to breathe the consequences of your self-destructive choice. As a smoker, Councilman Thune understands that responsibility very well, and I admire his solid sense of values for relegating the consequences of the decision to the smoker who has, and makes, the choice for him- or herself.
