Hanson Brother,
Don't forget that someone driving a 15 mpg vehicle for only 150 miles uses
the same amount of fuel as someone driving a 30 mpg vehicle twice as far.
So you need to look at total consumption and not just the rate of
consumption. The eco-commuter from Durand, WI burns more fuel than the
5-mile-each-way pick-up trucker. Just because I CAN drink more than you
doesn't mean I actually DO. Consider also banning poorly planned out
trips, wasteful accelerating, idling while waiting for trains, out-of-tune
engines, lawnmowers, etc.
I am trying to convince the DOC (Domestic Operating Committee) of the
merits of owning a Vespa and am expecting a Vespa brochure next week.
Hopefully they come with doggie sidecars. Perhaps you could send the DOC
supporting material, and an application for Gas Tax Exempt status. Let the
Gas Tax go up, for all I care.
Gas prices are still low. The rest of the world is not envious of our low
prices - they are angry and they ridicule us. In England, petrol is 80
pence per liter.
Converting:
(80 p/L)*(1.6 $/100p)*(3.785 L/US gal)= $4.84/gal,
more than double what we pay. Cigarettes in the UK cost up to 4.6 pounds
per pack, or $7.36, so this makes banning a little easier to do on the
Emerald Isle (where I assume prices are similarly outrageous).
Right on, Chuck - you can't get here from there. I can't tell you how many
times I have envisioned getting on a monorail at either W7, Randolph, or
Victoria and cruising down the middle of the Interstates, waving at all the
Woodburians and Curds as they creep their way into The Cities, and getting
off at Scotch Station. I probably wouldn't even have time for a nap so I
wouldn't miss my stop which has been known to happen. This monorail has
anti-reflective film on the inside of the car windows so I can actually
look out the window on dark, winter rides and see what's going on and where
I am, which is helpful in getting off at the right stop. (My imaginary
Subterrain shows Pink Panther cartoons and has XMSR headphone jacks, for a
more inward experience.)
What was the question?

I wish that Dave Thune would start to get tough. With
his proposed smoking ban on everybody's mind, how
about following it up with another ban thatâs been
needed for a long, long time. What I would suggest
would not only alleviate traffic congestion and lower
the cost of street maintenance, it would also allow
gas prices to go down and improve the public safety
and help protect the environment.
How about banning SUV'S and pickup trucks in the city
limits with possible exceptions for permittees?
I drive around just about everyday and I see nothing
in these gas guzzling freaks that would justify their
continued existence in the city. I don't see people
busy hauling anything except their own fat behinds.
Trucks are made to transport payloads and not a couple
of super-sized munching machines that can't fit into a
correctly sized vehicle. If pickups and SUV'S are not
hauling real payloads, there is no real reason for
their existence.
If a ban were to happen, the public safety would be
enhanced as well. We don't need studies and statistics
to show what these monstrosities do to a reasonable
sized vehicle in a accident. The sooner we get these
things off the road, the safer we all, that drive
correctly suited cars, will be.
It's time to demand the end the subsidization of this
huge gas guzzlers by the general public.
It's time to ban their use in the city of St. Paul, or
at least, demand a usage tax. When these vehicles
cause a shortage of gas because of the gas they
needlessly burn, we all pay for it at the pump.
Why should I, driving a CORRECT vehicle for the city
that recently celebrated 32.6 mpg, pay for gas
shortages caused by SUV'S and pickup trucks that that
get only 12 mpg?
I didnât cause it, they did. It's time to turn this
around and let the people that want to be piggish with
the gas, PAY FOR THE SHORTAGE AT THE PUMPS!
Give them the option: Either pay up or don't drive
these gas pigs in OUR city!!!
R. Hanson.
St. Paul.
