My response are bracketed.
Hanson Brother, Don't forget that someone driving a 15
mpg vehicle for only 150 miles uses the same amount of
fuel as someone driving a 30 mpg vehicle twice as far.
So you need to look at total consumption and not just
the rate of consumption. The eco-commuter from Durand,
WI burns more fuel than the 5-mile-each-way pick-up
trucker. Just because I CAN drink more than you
doesn't mean I actually DO. Consider also banning
poorly planned out trips, wasteful accelerating,
idling while waiting for trains, out-of-tune engines,
lawnmowers, etc.
[Your just playing with figures here and it has
nothing to go with reality. The reality is that most
drive about 15,000 miles / year.
Whether you do this in a Accura or a Yukon is the
subject.
Out of tune engines? Not these computer adjusted
engines. These engines are designed to be adjusted
automatically by an on board computer and they still
only get 12 mpg at peak efficiency! Just because you
can is reason enough to "drink" more than me and you
do. Remember: This is America, the home of elitist
capitalism. We don't have to have a legitimate reason
to use, abuse and excuse, we do it because we can get
away with it.
Take a look at the speeders on the highway. They don't
need a reason to break the speed laws. They do this
because they know they can get away with it. Thats
the current mentality we're dealing with.]
I am trying to convince the DOC (Domestic Operating
Committee) of the merits of owning a Vespa and am
expecting a Vespa brochure next week. Hopefully they
come with doggie sidecars. Perhaps you could send the
DOC supporting material, and an application for Gas
Tax Exempt status. Let the Gas Tax go up, for all I
care. Gas prices are still low. The rest of the world
is not envious of our low prices - they are angry and
they ridicule us. In England, petrol is 80 pence per
liter. Converting: (80 p/L)*(1.6 $/100p)*(3.785 L/US
gal)= $4.84/gal, more than double what we pay.
Cigarettes in the UK cost up to 4.6 pounds per pack,
or $7.36, so this makes banning a little easier to do
on the Emerald Isle (where I assume prices are
similarly outrageous).
[In a relationship to our population and our
consumption to the world population, we are the big
wasters in the world, no doubt about that. We seem to
gluttonize the rage of the moment. Whether is wasting
food in a game show atmosphere or wasting gas in car
racing, people who don't have the resources do hate
when they see us squander the worlds precious
resources on such silliness. They know how important
these resources are and we, on the other hand, haven't
got the foggiest idea.]
R. Hanson.
St. Paul.
