Eric, all,

I wouldn't call Kelly's endorsement "token." It seems that Kelly has been asked
(though hasn't accepted, to the best of my knowledge, anyway) to campaign with Bush
when he stops in Mankato on Wed. Moreover, press coverage and the MN GOP website has
indicated that Kelly will be stumping all over the state with Pawlenty, House Speaker
Steve Sviggum, and former legislator Bob Lessard for the Bush campaign.

I consider "token" support as just being a name on some letterhead or on a steering
committee. If Kelly's actually cruising around the state for the Bush campaign, seems
more than token support to me.

Personally, I don't see how Kelly could remain anything but a Republican after this
move. He's pretty much lost plausible deniability, at any rate. At this point, the
only question that remains is exactly how he sees himself fitting into Republican
party leadership in the state, or if he sees a national position for himself in a
victorious (heaven forbid) Bush-Cheney administration.

I don't get this endorsement. This city is clearly
Democratic. Norm Coleman didn't carry one single
precinct in the town he governed for two terms, when
he ran for Senate.

Maybe, just maybe, the Bush administraion has made a
deal that is very pro-St Paul (no idea what that could
be), and in return they only ask for token support
from the Mayor. Of course in doing so, it appears that
the Mayor's re-election just got tougher.

Kelly didn't switch parties, he just endorsed the best
unifier the Democrats ever had. He's too smart of a
politician for this to be a simple as it seems. Best
to wait and see what comes of this.

There is a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious, makes you so sick
at heart, that you can't take part; you can't even passively take part, and you've got
to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels, upon the levers, upon all the
apparatus, and you've got to make it stop. And you've got to indicate to the people
who run it, to the people who own it, that unless you're free, the machine will be
prevented from working at all!--- Mario Savio
