I have been meaning to respond to this recent thread before now, but I will reiterate the points I made about Lite Rail in Saint Paul about 2 years ago.
1. I firmly support light rail in Saint Paul, but believe that light rail down University Avenue will be a disaster. The light rial corridor in Saint Paul should be along I-94, along either St. Anthony Avenue or Concordia Avenue and not University. Look at the delays in Minneapolis. If we build lite rauil down University Avenue, we will never get the suburbinites out of their cars. This is for two reasons. Look at Chicago, Portland and the D.C. Metro. In Chicago the "El" goes along the Dan Ryan, the Kennedy and The Eisenhower Expressways. Where they mix with street traffic they are either elevated or underground. I don't believe that at anyplace in Chicago does the "El" mix with street traffic. Ditto for the D.C. Metro, BART in the Bay Area, St. Louis or New York City. Lite rail and street traffic DO NOT MIX! In Portland where the light rail mixes with traffic downtown, it is slow and ponderous. Once the light rail gets beyond the Rose Center and and parallels I-90 it zips along. O.K. I'm way over 150 words here. Light rail in St. Paul, along I-94, then across the old Railroad bridge by the Shiners Hospital at East River Road, Parallel to Lake Street at 28th, merge at the Hiawatha - Lake Street Station, then west along the Minneapolis Greenway eventually out to Chaska and Shakopee. East along I-94 eventually Easy to Hudson and East along the Phalen corridor to Stillwater. We need to think what do we want this system to look like in 25 - 50 - 100 years from now. How will we get people out of their cars? What will we do when gas hits $5.00 - $7.00 a gallon by 2050?
