So John.....why haven't you introduced yourself to your next door neighbor?

Well Dennis, those that I have seen outdoors I have, those are the few that I have meet. The rest, I never see except for when they run from the car to the house.

Why the difference in behavior when you are up north at your cabin vs here
in the city at your home?

Cause maybe people are outside socializing more as a community than here in the cities. Maybe cause people seem generally more friendly than here in the cities making that easier. Maybe cause when we introduced ourselves we told each other if you need any help just say so. Maybe cause people are OUTSIDE not hiding in their houses. In other words it's a real COMMUNITY.

This trash discussion has spread over to my Uncle who at one time was a Deputy for Ramsey County. He know is retired and living in FL. He told me that the COUNTY down there picks up everyone's trash, and he likes the idea. They take everything... Old furniture, stoves, etc.., put it out on the street and they come along and take it. I said to him sounds like it's pretty expensive way to do things. He wasn't sure what it costs the county but on the up side is that they have no trash dumps like we do here in St Paul. If you ever go over by Harriet Island under the High bridge and along the bluffs on the West End you will almost daily find JUNK that people have dumped cause they don't want to pay to have the old stove hauled away, so they take it and just drop it when no one is looking. If you have any doubt just ask the Parks people who work over there, they will tell you that it is a constant problem WE (they are working for us) have to deal with and pay for.

Let's say the District Council organized your block to a
hauler and the hauler was late, who would you call to complain to? Dumped
garbage on your lawn? Banged the cans together at 5:30 AM? That crappy District
council gave me this lame hauler what a bunch of stupid jerks!

Chuck makes a compelling argument for why the district councils shouldn't be involved, but that really wasn't the idea that I had originally.

I don't have all the answers, just tossing out idea's on how neighbors can help neighbors who in turn help the city and at the same time keep the costs down for everyone.
