It's a great idea, John. That's has been the problem with privatizing the
trash haulers. How many trash hauling trucks do you have on your street or
alley each and every day? Think of the fuel those trucks use...think about how
much damage to the street itself is caused by the heavy trucks...think about the
gas fumes from those monsters enveloping the neighborhood.

Trash hauling was something I've always considered one of the vital services
the City should provide with our tax monies. The City workers were paid a
living wage and, as is the rule with City and County employees, they worked
quickly and efficiently. You know the private companies are not paying their
employees particularly well...that's how they keep their prices down. (Hah!)

There is this myth afoot about government employees that says they are lazy,
stupid and spend much of their time sitting around doing nothing. I can't
vouch for Cities or Counties other than St. Paul and Ramsey County employees.
The people working for these two entities are without a doubt the hardest
working, most dedicated and intelligent people anywhere. In just the 10 years I
worked for the Ramsey County our workforce was cut back twice to try to balance
our departmental budget - which kept getting smaller each year. Therefore, you
have people now in those positions doing the work that three people had done
before the cutbacks. They do it with efficiency and with a smile. They offer
to help any who come into the offices and the dozens of calls each of them
gets from the public every day. What I'm saying is whatever problems you may
have with government offices, it's rarely the line employee who is at fault.
