I usually lurk on political issues. But this character assessment
(assasination?) of Betty McCollum is off the wall. Two weeks ago I had the
opportunity to listen to Betty report back to a group of constituents on her
congressional trip to find out what is happening in Iraq today. Whether one
agreed with Congresswoman McCollum's interpetation or assessment of what she
found in Iraq it was clear that it was thoughtful, analytic and based in fact.

in addition, I knew Cong. Vento for twenty years before his death. Cong. Vento
endorsed Betty for his seat. Cong Vento was extraordinary but he operated for
much of his career in the majority in a much less partisan environment in
Congress. That was a much easier environment to produce legislation.

Finally, I believe Betty's last job was in the Minnesota House. She beat two
incumbents in 1992 to get there. Apparently her suburban/urban district thought
a lot of her and didn't seem to mind her clerking at Dayton's. By the way is
honest labor to earn money to take of one's family to be despised, or are only
lawyers allowed in Congress.
