I would disagree with your assessment John. Clearly the strongest
challenger that Mayor Kelly will face will be whichever candidate wins the
DFL endorsment for mayor. I would think in light of Mayor Kelly's
endorsemnt of George Bush in the presidential election he has already
decided not to seek the endorsment. I'm sure he will try and stakeout the
political moral high ground of being above partisan politics at this point
in his political career and that he is concentrating on doing what is right
for St. Paul, mom and apple pie.

Voters in St. Paul need a break from politics for awhile after the long,
hard fought election of 2004 so there is plenty of time for a candidate
that is interested in seeking the DFL endorsement to put together a winning
team.

The process begins with the March 2005 precinct caucuses. There can be a
tactical advantage to publically declaring one's interest in running for
mayor before the end of 2004 but the most important work that needs to be
done is the behind the scenes planning and organizing from within the ranks
of hardcore political operatives.

There is plenty of time for a serious candidate for mayor to emerge to
challenge Mayor Kelly. Relax, and bask in the afterglow of the Bush/Cheney

victory! :-(
