its unconscionable that any school doesn't have the proper materials
to teach its students. Its bad enough that many teachers buy
supplies out of pocket so they can teach. Now we have an example of
a school having improper reading materials.

I agree with Robert. How did this happen?

Can someone explain the pressures a school administrator faces that
allows this to happen? I know school funding has decreased thanks
to the like of the Taxpayers League and their followers; but are our
schools that underfunded that the only possible savings come from
reduced spending on educational materials.

If we have this problem with reading materials, what does this say
about math and science materials?

But the good thing is we keep those athletic programs fully
funded!

St. Paul Issues Members,

Nick Coleman in his Star Tribune column today has what I would call
a
disturbing story about Maxfield Elementary School. In summary he
writes
about the lack of reading materials and books in the classrooms and
library.
The literacy teacher, Sarah Carlsson, is quoted, "And a lot of
the books
we did have were the wrong level, like first-grade books in a fifth
-grade
class".

My concern is how did this happen? Who is accountable for this
most basic
need of adequate reading materials for an educational institution?

Sorry that I don't have the web link. The column is in the Metro
section of
today's Mpls Star-Tribune.
