While I agree it would be nice to find a home town person who will
likely stay that is quite unlikely. I can also agree that we
probably have people who would do an excellent job as a
superintendent. However, lets be real. There are very few people
who won't go where there are greener pastures. Most of them work in
non-profits.

I think everyone knows the process involved with filling a highly
visible position like superintendent. You have the list of expected
skills knowledge and abilities. Add to this minimum education
requirements. To this add experience. For good measure add the
fiscal and administrative health of the unit conducting the search.
Then mix in a good portion of political involvement from every
conceivable special interest group associated with the hiring unit.
Thus begins the recruitment process.

Yes it would be nice if our professional athletes would give up a
larger paycheck to stay here. It would be nice if our nationally
recognized TV personalities would stay here. It would be nice if
good old Minnesota Corporate headquarters would stay here. But
folks this isn't reality.

Minnesota professional sports fans must accept the fact that their
favorite player will usually move to another team when offered a
better deal. Minnesota employees must accept the fact that
corporate boards don't give a hoot about the employee's bottom line,
only their own. We also need to accept the fact that good TV
personalities are sought by the networks for national exposure.

So outside of wishing it could be, why would we limit our selection
to only a small number of people who ultimately may not be willing
to stay once they have the ability to move on?

I am with Dennis on this. I would agree. I also always find it
interesting
that we can never find an intelligent, educated, saavy and "bound
to stay"
Minnesotan to take on this job. I feel that we should always,
bottom line,
hire a Minnesotan.
