I think that the answer to your question can best be answered by the aptly-written lines of Sally Field and Ron Leibman in the film Norma Rae.

Yeah, there are corrupt unions and there are corrupt companies. Target and Wal-Mart have their own best interest in mind while unions, when functioning properly, have the best interests of workers in mind.

Now, if we just raise the minimum wage it wouldn't be such a bad deal to pay in a little for that kind of protection.
