Thanks John, for presenting an opportunity to clarify my points!

I don't think "mistakes" that some of our Mayor's administrations are quite
that innocent or "noble" in promoting their fantasy developments. I would
rather describe some of their supporters that way.

My post really wasn't intended to defend anyone in particular (although it could be read that way).

I worry that "urban enthusiasts," myself among them, might be somewhat out of touch with the financial realities of developing a site like Lexington and University. I have lots of ideas for how the site should look, but the fact is - I've got really no clue about what will actually "work." In addition, I'm troubled by the fact, that my dream development for the site would probably run counter to the desires of current residents of the community (most of whom aren't very vocal in public debates) and could lead to "gentrification" of surrounding communities.

In a similar vain, I bet that a legitimate poll of Midway residents would demonstrate a favorable attitude towards the Midway WalMart, which I happen to think is a VERY bad thing - as do most of willing to "speak up" on this list. Yet, Andrew Hine called upon us to "pay attention to what the "ground troops" are saying."

Who are the "ground troops?" and what if they are clamoring for a WalMart or Aldi in their backyard?

A comparison with "out of touch" downtown developments, may or may not make sense. It did to me, at least for a few minutes.

I oppose the ALDI development at Lexington and University, but the comments by Mr. Wellington in the Midway Como Monitor got me thinking.

I happen to think, that thinking is a good thing.....

  :-)

Thanks,
