I am one of the few people here that has (probably) been in Fountain Cave. I say "probably" because it's hard to say for sure, the way things have been blown up.

However, there's one wet and largely natural cave there, right under Shepard Road and right where the plaque says it was removed.

Fountain cave, alone, would be one Hell of an attraction. It is quite amazing. Remember that the drainage of Crocus Hill (or, that part not screwed up by I-35E) winds up there, after passing through the vast peat swamp that was Jefferson/Randolph/and down. There's a LOT of water going through there.

But the city keeps filling it in, and kid-sized holes sprout up along with the gargoyles carved into the soft sandstone of the equally impressive Schmidt tunnels (15 feet high, 20 feet wide, stretching for easily a hundred yards in parallel).

How people see this as a nuisance is beyond me. I honestly consider digging out these caves a valid form of civil unrest, and a viable protest. I think we should all do it, actively, and tell the freakin' morons in the city to bite me.
